‘Smildiger Venen’. Due to excavation and reclamation, most of the peat has also disappeared here, as it has everywhere in the Netherlands. The peat bogs were an important fuel source. Only 2% of the original raised bog area remains, most of which has been degenerated and dried out. Fortunately, the Fochteloërveen still has a core with living raised bog.
Raised bog is only fed by rainwater. Because clean rainwater contains hardly any nutrients, raised bog is nutrient-poor. The plants that grow there are adapted to this. They are all rare and special plants.
Natuurmonumenten is committed to preserving the Fochteloërveen. The core of the policy is to ensure sufficient clean and nutrient-poor water. This is vital for a healthy raised bog area. That is why Natuurmonumenten has been working for years to rewet this area.
