El área natural de Hulshorsterzand también se puede llamar tierra de Tinbergen. Nikolaas (Niko) Tinbergen es un etólogo holandés de renombre mundial, que se centró en el comportamiento de los animales a lo largo de su vida. En ese momento, esta era una rama muy nueva de la biología, por lo que también se le considera uno de los fundadores de la etología (estudio del comportamiento). En 1973, recibió un Premio Nobel de Fisiología o Medicina. El biólogo evolutivo Richard Dawkins fue uno de los que recibió formación de Tinbergen en Oxford. Tinbergen solía pasear por Hulhorst y realizó investigaciones sobre animales aquí.
