Fue fundado en el siglo XV por la familia Heringa. En 1603 pasó a ser propiedad de la familia Van Eysinga, y en 1631 fue remodelado de manera significativa. En 1687 fue comprado por el Dr. Henricus Popta. Tras su muerte en 1712, se legó por testamento el Poptaslot a la casa de descanso Poptagasthuis, un hogar para mujeres indigentes. Desde 1906 hasta 1908, el Poptaslot fue restaurado y reformado según un diseño del arquitecto de La Haya Johan Frederik Lodewijk Frowein. La casa está aún amueblada y decorada en estilo del siglo XVII y XVIII.
