Otra residente conocida de Sluis fue Johan Hendrik van Dale (1828-1872). Maestro principal y archivero de esta ciudad, pero sobre todo famoso como el fundador del Diccionario Neerlandés. El Dikke van Dale es un concepto en los Países Bajos y Flandes. Sin duda, el maestro Van Dale contó a sus alumnos mucho sobre el rico pasado de esta ciudad fortificada. Una ruta histórica de senderismo pasa por el centro y luego sobre las viejas murallas de la ciudad, donde se ha construido un sendero. Sluis tenía tres puertas de la ciudad, que datan del siglo XV.
