Un altro noto abitante di Sluis è stato Johan Hendrik van Dale (1828-1872). Insegnante principale e archivista della città, ma naturalmente famoso soprattutto come il fondatore del Dizionario Olandese. Il Dikke van Dale è un concetto nei Paesi Bassi e in Flanders. È indubbio che il maestro Van Dale abbia raccontato molto ai suoi alunni sul ricco passato di questa città fortificata. Un percorso storico attraversa il centro e poi prosegue sulle antiche mura cittadine, su cui è stato realizzato un sentiero. Sluis aveva tre porte cittadine, risalenti al XV secolo. La Porta Sud e la Porta Est sono state completamente restaurate, la Porta Ovest parzialmente. Lungo il cammino si passa davanti al mulino a vento De Brak (1739).
