Another well-known resident of Sluis was Johan Hendrik van Dale (1828-1872). Headteacher and city archivist of this city, but of course especially famous as the founder of the Dutch Dictionary. De Dikke van Dale is a household name in the Netherlands and Flanders. Undoubtedly, Master Van Dale told his pupils a lot about the rich past of this fortified city. A historic walking route goes through the center and then over the old city walls, on which a path has been laid out. Sluis had three city gates, which date from the 15th century. The South and East Gates have been completely restored, the West Gate partially. Along the way you pass the wind grist mill De Brak (1739).
