IJzendijke debe su nombre al pueblito Isendike, que desapareció para siempre durante la famosa inundación de Santa Isabel en el siglo XV. El nuevo IJzendijke fue construido como una fortaleza, de la cual hoy en día queda un solo baluarte (en la Boulevard).
