IJzendijke doit son nom au village d'Isendike, qui a disparu à jamais lors de la célèbre inondation de Sainte-Élisabeth au XVe siècle. La nouvelle IJzendijke a été construite en tant que forteresse, dont il reste aujourd'hui un bastion (près de la Boulevard).
