El Parque de las Flores de Cereza se originó tras una donación de 400 cerezos a Amstelveen por parte del Japan Women's Club en 2000. Cada árbol tiene un nombre: 200 árboles tienen un nombre japonés, los otros 200 tienen un nombre de mujer holandesa.

El parque se ha convertido en un lugar querido para la comunidad japonesa. Cada año, cuando los cerezos están en flor, se celebra el festival 'Hanami Matsuri', donde se celebra la llegada de la primavera y los visitantes hacen picnics bajo los árboles.

El municipio de Amstelveen organiza entonces el Cherry Blossom Festival, con muchas personalidades prominentes presentes.
