Le Parc des Fleurs de Cerisier est né d'un don de 400 cerisiers à Amstelveen par le Japan Women's Club en 2000. Chaque arbre a un nom : 200 arbres portent un nom japonais, les 200 autres un nom de femme néerlandaise.

Le parc est maintenant un lieu prisé par la communauté japonaise. Chaque année, lorsque les cerisiers sont en fleurs, a lieu la fête 'Hanami Matsuri' où l'on célèbre le début du printemps et où les visiteurs pique-niquent sous les arbres.

La municipalité d'Amstelveen organise alors le Festival des Cerisiers en Fleurs, avec de nombreuses personnalités présentes.
