Il Parco dei Fiori di Ciliegio è nato grazie a una donazione di 400 alberi di ciliegio ad Amstelveen da parte del Japan Women's Club nel 2000. Ogni albero ha un nome: 200 alberi hanno un nome giapponese, gli altri 200 un nome femminile olandese.

Il parco è ormai un luogo amato dalla comunità giapponese. Ogni anno, quando gli alberi di ciliegio sono in fiore, si svolge il festival 'Hanami Matsuri', durante il quale si celebra che è arrivata la primavera e i visitatori fanno un picnic sotto gli alberi.

Il comune di Amstelveen organizza quindi il Cherry Blossom Festival, con molti ospiti di rilievo.
