La puerta de agua Monnikendam fue construida a principios del siglo XV como parte de la segunda muralla de la ciudad y consta de dos torres redondeadas, que están conectadas entre sí por un arco. Cuando alrededor de 1840 se comenzó a demoler las antiguas murallas de la ciudad, Monnikendam fue incluida en el diseño del nuevo parque, diseñado por el arquitecto paisajista J.D. Zocher jr.
