The water gate Monnikendam was built at the beginning of the 15th century as part of the second city wall and consists of two round wall towers connected by an arch. It likely owes its name to Augustinian monks who were based at the nearby Saint Andrew's field.
What is special about it is that it is a combination of both a water gate and a land gate. The Heiligenbergerbeek stream flows into the city here from the Gelderland Valley.
When around 1840 the demolition of the old city walls began, Monnikendam was incorporated into the design of the new park by landscape architect J.D. Zocher Jr.
