Para evitar una repetición del año desastroso de 1672, el stadholder Guillermo III ordena en 1673 que se refuerce el dique del Rin en Wiericke con una fortaleza. En un plazo de seis meses, en julio de ese año, se termina el “Gran fortín en el pequeño Wierick”.
El plano de la fortaleza se elaboró originalmente según el antiguo sistema neerlandés y se asemejaba mucho a las ciudades fortificadas circundantes que también encontraban protección tras puertas, murallas y bastiones.
La fortaleza de Wierickerschans se ha adaptado continuamente a los cambios y perspectivas de las fuerzas armadas, pero ha mantenido su forma original.
