To prevent a repetition of the disaster year 1672, stadtholder William III ordered in 1673 to reinforce the Rijn dike at the Wiericke with a fortification. Within six months, by July of that year, the “Great fort at the small Wierick” was completed.
The layout of the fort was originally made according to the Old Dutch system and strongly resembled the surrounding 'strong cities' that also found protection behind gates, ramparts, and bastions.
Fort Wierickerschans has always been adapted to the changes and insights of the military, but it has retained its original shape.
