El pueblo tiene, según datos del CBS, 2.295 habitantes, incluyendo los barrios separados. La densidad de población del antiguo municipio era de 53,13 habitantes por km². El pueblo de Finsterwolde cuenta con aproximadamente 1250 habitantes. Al pueblo de Finsterwolde pertenecen los barrios Ekamp, Kromme Elleboog, Hardenberg, Goldhoorn, Ganzedijk, Finsterwolderhamrik, Hongerige Wolf y Reiderwolderpolder. Los barrios Bellingwolderzijl, Egypterdijk, Veenhuizen y Reindersoord han desaparecido del mapa. El núcleo del pueblo era probablemente conocido en el siglo XVIII como Molengilde. Pequeñas áreas antes eran Huninga Meerlanden, Modderlanden, Vledder y Torpsen. Los principales pólderes eran Finsterwolderhamrik, Oostwolderpolder, Finsterwolderpolder, Reiderwolderpolder, Eerste Afdeling y Carel Coenraadpolder.
