La liberación de Groningen, también conocida como la batalla de Groningen, tuvo lugar al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Del 13 al 16 de abril se luchó entre, por un lado, soldados de la Wehrmacht alemana, SS holandeses y belgas, y por otro lado, toda la 2ª división de infantería canadiense. La estrategia alemana fue mala y los defensores nunca habían luchado juntos. Los canadienses querían tomar la ciudad rápidamente para poder avanzar hacia Delfzijl y abrir este puerto para convoyes de alimentos y poder proveer de comida a la población hambrienta de los Países Bajos occidentales. Además, así se podría cerrar el Ems para dificultar que los submarinos alemanes aún activos pudieran seguir utilizando el Ems como base de operaciones.
