El cálido brillo dorado de la ciudad de piedra caliza es un reflejo de la hospitalidad por la que se conoce a Valkenburg. Es la única antigua ciudad fortificada en los Países Bajos con un castillo en altura. La Grendelpoort, la Geulpoort y el Halderpark son imprescindibles para los visitantes de Valkenburg.
La Geulpoort es originalmente una puerta de ciudad medieval en la muralla de Valkenburg. La puerta fue desmantelada gradualmente a partir de 1644, pero fue reconstruida en 2014.
