Café, licor y también animales vivos se llevaban de contrabando por la frontera entre Alemania y los Países Bajos, eludiendo a los aduaneros. Los contrabandistas y los funcionarios fronterizos competían entre sí en ingenio, de tal manera que el comportamiento ilegal a menudo adquiría el carácter de un juego del gato y el ratón. Hoy en día, el romántico Witte Venn en Münsterland es un paraíso para caminatas y la naturaleza.
