El Museo del Ferrocarril, hasta 2005 conocido como Museo del Ferrocarril Holandés, está ubicado desde 1954 en la estación Maliebaan, construida en 1874, en la línea ferroviaria oriental de la ciudad de Utrecht. El 7 de enero de 1927 se fundó la Fundación Museo del Ferrocarril Holandés. La colección se alojó en un edificio de los Ferrocarriles Holandeses en Utrecht, que ya ha desaparecido, donde el Museo del Ferrocarril Holandés fue inaugurado oficialmente el 1 de diciembre de 1928. La colección contenía principalmente imágenes, documentación y atributos ferroviarios. En 1935, el museo se mudó al Edificio Principal de NS I en el parque Moreelse. En los años treinta se tomaron las primeras iniciativas para preservar material ferroviario antiguo de importancia histórica. Como resultado de las circunstancias de guerra, parte de este material se perdió.
