Westerwolde es una región en el este de Groningen, Países Bajos, alrededor de los ríos Ruiten-Aa, Mussel-Aa y Westerwoldse Aa. La zona fue llamada en el siglo XVIII Woldingen o Westwoldingen, y sus habitantes, Westwoldingers. Al oeste y sur de Westerwolde se encuentran las colonias de turba de Groningen, al norte Reiderland y al este Eemsland. Los antiguos pueblos de Ter Apel, Sellingen, Vlagtwedde, Onstwedde, Wedde y Vriescheloo, así como el más tarde fundado Alteveer, pertenecen a esta antigua señoría.
