Westerwolde est une région dans la partie orientale des Pays-Bas, autour des ruisseaux de Ruiten-Aa, de Mussel-Aa et de Westerwoldse Aa. La région était également connue au 18ème siècle sous le nom de Woldingen ou Westwoldingen, et ses habitants étaient appelés Westwoldingers. À l'ouest et au sud de Westerwolde se trouvent les colonies de tourbières de Groningue, au nord le Reiderland et à l'est l'Emsland. Les anciens villages de Ter Apel, Sellingen, Vlagtwedde, Onstwedde, Wedde et Vriescheloo, ainsi que le Alteveer fondé par la suite, font partie de cette ancienne seigneurie. Bellingwolde et Blijham formaient une seigneurie distincte, qui avait de vieux liens forts avec l'Oldambt. Le village fortifié de Bourtange, fondé en 1593, était sous l'autorité des États généraux.
