El hecho de que aquí haya una copia de la Basílica de San Pedro en Roma se lo debemos al Pastor Willem Hellemons. Él encargó la construcción de la iglesia, en sustitución de la iglesia gótica de Oudenbosch. Hellemons había estudiado en Roma y allí se impresionó por la arquitectura eclesiástica. Aunque el pastor tenía aversión por el gótico y el neogótico, fue precisamente P.J.H. Cuypers, el arquitecto neerlandés por excelencia del neogótico, quien recibió el encargo de diseñar la nueva iglesia. Cuypers se trasladó a Roma para estudiar especialmente la iglesia de San Pedro. La cúpula la tomó de la iglesia de San Pedro, pero la nave y la fachada posteriormente añadidas son las de San Juan de Letrán.
