Il fatto che qui ci sia una copia della Basilica di San Pietro a Roma lo dobbiamo a Don Willem Hellemons. Egli ordinò la costruzione della chiesa, in sostituzione della chiesa gotica di Oudenbosch. Hellemons aveva studiato a Roma e lì era rimasto colpito dall'architettura ecclesiastica. Sebbene il parroco avesse un'avversione per il gotico e il neogotico, fu proprio P.J.H. Cuypers, il principale architetto olandese del neogotico, a ricevere l'incarico di progettare la nuova chiesa. Cuypers partì per Roma per studiare in particolare la Chiesa di San Pietro. La cupola la prese dalla Chiesa di San Pietro, ma il navata e la facciata successivamente aggiunti sono quelli di San Giovanni in Laterano.
