Die Tatsache, dass hier eine Kopie der Petersbasilika in Rom steht, verdanken wir Pastor Willem Hellemons. Er gab den Auftrag zum Bau der Kirche, als Ersatz für die gotische Kirche von Oudenbosch. Hellemons hatte in Rom studiert und war dort von der kirchlichen Architektur beeindruckt. Obwohl der Pastor eine Abneigung gegen Gotik und Neugotik hatte, war es gerade P.J.H. Cuypers, der herausragende niederländische Architekt der Neugotik, der den Auftrag erhielt, die neue Kirche zu entwerfen. Cuypers reiste dafür nach Rom, um insbesondere die Peterskirche zu studieren. Die Kuppel übernahm er von der Peterskirche, aber das später angebaute Schiff und die Fassade stammen von der San Giovanni in Laterano.
