En 1843, las hermanas Ursulinas se establecieron en Sittard. Aquí iniciaron un instituto educativo para jóvenes niñas de Sittard y sus alrededores, con un internado. Las hermanas no solo ofrecían educación secundaria, sino también educación primaria, una escuela de cuidado y hasta una escuela de costura, punto y bordado.
Las Ursulinas desempeñaron un papel importante en el ámbito de la emancipación femenina en la región a través de su educación durante más de cien años. En el internado de las Ursulinas, en el ala más antigua del convento Ursulino, ahora se encuentra un hermoso hotel convento de cuatro estrellas con carácter internacional.
