Engelen es un núcleo de población en el municipio de 's-Hertogenbosch, en la provincia neerlandesa de Brabante Septentrional. Este núcleo se encuentra a orillas del Dieze y el canal Diezekanaal.
La investigación arqueológica ha demostrado que ya en la Edad del Hierro había asentamientos en el lugar del actual Engelen. Sin embargo, no fue hasta el 815 que se menciona el pueblo de Angrisa, el actual Engelen. Este documento fue copiado en el Codex Laureshamensis, alrededor de 1180, en el que se habla de una donación por parte del noble franco Alfger de propiedades en Engelen y sus alrededores a la abadía de Lorsch. Podemos suponer que el documento se basa en una falsificación. En 1147, las propiedades fueron transferidas al Cabildo de Lieja, lo que fue confirmado por el papa Eugenio III.
