La señoría de Buren, más tarde elevada a condado, en la actual provincia de Gelderland, en principio no formaba parte de las Provincias Unidas hasta 1714, pero en la práctica sí dependía en gran medida de ellas.
La libre señoría de Buren se originó en el año 994 cuando se dividió el condado de Teisterbant. La señoría fue gobernada por la familia de Buren. Su escudo familiar también se convirtió en el escudo de la señoría y de la capital Buren.
