Dodewaard se menciona por primera vez a finales del siglo XI como de Dodeuuero. En 1171 como Dudenwert, en los treinta años siguientes aparecen varias variantes de estos dos nombres, como en 1181 la Dondenuuerhe, en 1190 Dudenwert y en 1200 la Dudenwerthe. 'Dode' en Dodewaard se refiere a un antiguo nombre personal germánico que se escribía como Dodo, Dode y Dudan. El sufijo waard podría haber derivado de la denominación waritha, que se refiere a un área que está parcialmente o totalmente rodeada por ríos, o de la denominación werth (en alemán) que significa tierra o isla en el agua. Dodewaard se encuentra en la Nederbetuwe entre el Waalbandijk y la A15 de Tiel a Arnhem y Nimega. A nivel nacional es conocido por la central nuclear que fue desactivada en 1997.
