La Basílica Menor Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate en Hormigueros honora a la Santísima Virgen cuya devoción en este pueblo pequeño en tamaño, pero inmenso en corazón nació en el calor de la fe al ser bendecido con su visita, que le ha dado renombre a través de todo el mundo.
Cuenta la leyenda que la iglesia, hoy basílica y santuario, se construyó para celebrar la intercesión de Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate al salvarle la vida a el jíbaro campesino Giraldo González, en el 1590. Un segundo milagro se le atribuye a la Virgen de la Monserrate al cuidar por el bienestar de la nieta del mismo campesino, la cual anduvo perdida en el bosque por 15 días.
