La catedral de OLV Asunción es uno de los monumentos más importantes de Évora. Cuando Évora fue reconquistada por los cristianos a los musulmanes en 1166, se comenzó de inmediato la construcción de una catedral dedicada a la Virgen Santa. La catedral fue inaugurada en 1204. El edificio contiene características de estilo románico y gótico y ha sido remodelado regularmente a lo largo de los siglos. En el siglo XIV se añadió un claustro en puro estilo gótico. En los siglos XV y XVI se añadieron el coro, el púlpito, el baptisterio y la capilla de OLV de la Misericordia en estilo manuelino. En el siglo XVIII se construyó la Capilla Mayor en estilo barroco.
