El Duero es el río más importante del noroeste de la península ibérica. Nace en la falda sur del pico Urbión, a unos 2160 m sobre el nivel del mar, y desemboca en el océano Atlántico, en el estuario de Oporto. Tiene 897 km de largo, con 572 de recorrido en territorio español, 213 navegables por tierras portuguesas y 112 km de carácter internacional, al coincidir con su curso la frontera entre ambos países. En este último tramo, el cauce se estrecha y profundiza, formando los denominados arribes, protegidos con la creación de los parques naturales del Duero Internacional en Portugal y de Arribes del Duero en España.[1][2][3]
