Las Portas do Meio son la puerta por la que se accede al pueblo.
La nueva fortaleza, creada en el siglo XVIII mediante reformas y ampliaciones, se dividió en dos zonas, todavía hoy bastante diferenciadas, conectadas por la Porta do Meio.
Al norte se extiende la zona denominada “ Magistral ” o “ Villa ”, de planta mayoritariamente rectangular, que abarca el antiguo núcleo medieval, donde se concentraba la mayor parte de la población y los principales equipamientos sociales y administrativos. Está formada por siete baluartes y tres revellines.
Al sur se encuentra la zona de “ Coroada ”, una zona más pequeña, pero casi sin urbanizar, formada por tres baluartes y dos revellines.
A pesar de todo ello, fortaleza en principio inexpugnable construida en el siglo XVIII, Valença fue atacada durante la Guerra de la Independencia y cayó en manos de las tropas napoleónicas en 1809.
