Gracias a su favorable ubicación geográfica, Pinhão se convirtió en un importante centro comercial para el transporte de vinos de Oporto . Primero por rabelo, luego por tren a lo largo del Duero y finalmente por barco cisterna, el lugar pronto se convirtió en un centro regional del comercio portuario.
Desde su transformación en parroquia en 1933 se convirtió inmediatamente en precursora al instalar alumbrado público con electricidad y la primera parroquia con teléfono, servicio de correos y agua corriente.
Para los turistas que visitan el río Duero, Pinhão es una parada en un viaje en barco desde Oporto o en el histórico tren de vapor de Régua a Tua.
Este lugar tiene una famosa estación de tren, una de las más bonitas de Portugal.
Las bodegas tradicionales, la artesanía y, sobre todo, el famoso paisaje en terrazas de los viñedos del Duero son activos importantes.
