Kropyvnytskyi llamado hasta 1924 como Elisavetgrado y entre 1939 y 2016 como Kirovogrado, es una ciudad de importancia regional ubicada en el centro de Ucrania sobre la rivera del río Inhul. Tiene una población de aproximadamente 227 413 habitantes.
Se desarrolló inicialmente en torno a un asentamiento militar, para posteriormente durante el siglo XIX convertirse en un gran centro de intercambio comercial, pasando a ser además un centro cultural debido a que la primera compañía de teatro ucraniana se estableció en Kirovogrado durante 1883.
