La masacre de la Escuela Secundaria de Columbine fue un tiroteo escolar ocurrido el 20 de abril de 1999 en Columbine , un área no incorporada del condado de Jefferson.[1] El ataque también involucró una bomba de fuego para distraer al equipo de bomberos y 99 artefactos explosivos. Los perpetradores eran los estudiantes de último año, Eric Harris y Dylan Klebold, quienes asesinaron a 12 estudiantes y a un profesor. Además, lesionaron a otras 24 personas y tres más resultaron heridas al intentar escapar de la escuela. Los perpetradores se suicidaron posteriormente.[2][3]
Aunque sus motivos exactos no están claros, los diarios personales de los perpetradores documentan que deseaban que sus acciones rivalizaran el Atentado de Oklahoma City y otros incidentes mortales en los Estados Unidos en la década de 1990. Harris también manifestó el deseo de estrellar aviones contra el Empire State o las Torres Gemelas, pensamiento que se materializaría en el 11S.
El ataque fue definido por USA Today como un «ataque suicida planeado como un gran bombardeo terrorista».[4]
