La Junta Nacional de Seguridad del Transporte es una organización independiente del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos que se dedica a la investigación de accidentes de aviación civil, carreteras, marinos, oleoductos y ferrocarriles de ese país.[1] Cuando se solicite, la NTSB podrá ayudar a los militares y a gobiernos extranjeros con la investigación de accidentes.[1] La agencia tiene sede en Washington D.C.
El origen de la NTSB fue en la “Air Commerce Act” de 1926, que asignó al Departamento de Comercio de los Estados Unidos la responsabilidad de investigar los accidentes de aviación en territorio nacional.[2] El primer Consejo Independiente de Seguridad Aérea en los Estados Unidos fue establecido en 1938:[3] duró 14 meses.[4] En 1940, esta autoridad fue transferida a la Oficina de Aeronáutica Civil de la recién formada Oficina de Seguridad Aérea.[2]
