La historia humana de Colorado comienza con la habitación de la región por los pueblos indígenas de América. El Sitio Lindenmeier en el Condado de Larimer es un yacimiento arqueológico de la Cultura folsom con artefactos que datan de 8710 a.C.
Cuando se asentaron los primeros exploradores, cazadores, tramperos y buscadores de oro se asentaron en Colorado, el estado albergaba ya varias naciones indígenas. La expansión hacia oriente de los europeos atrajo a colonos a dicha área, y la historia registrada de Colorado comienza con los tratados y guerras contra México y naciones indígenas para el control de tierra. A principios de la fiebre de oro de Colorado, el área fue parte del Territorio de Kansas y el Territorio de Jefferson. El 1 de agosto de 1876, Colorado se convirtió en estado de los Estados Unidos, y mantuvo sus fronteras territoriales.
