Baltimore es la ciudad más poblada del estado estadounidense de Maryland. Está situada en el centro del estado, junto al río Patapsco,[11] que desemboca en la bahía de Chesapeake. Fundada en 1729, es un importante centro portuario, el más próximo de la Costa Este a los mercados del Medio Oeste, y, antiguamente, el segundo puerto que mayor volumen de entrada de inmigrantes recibía en los Estados Unidos y un importante centro manufacturero.
Tras el declive de la manufactura, la economía de Baltimore cambió hacia el sector servicios. La Universidad Johns Hopkins y el Hospital Johns Hopkins acaparan la mayor cifra de trabajadores de la ciudad. En 2008, la población de Baltimore era de 636.919 habitantes,[2] mientras que el Área Metropolitana de Baltimore era de 2.668.056 habitantes, la 20ª más grande del país. El área estadística combinada asociada a Baltimore tiene alrededor de 8,3 millones de habitantes.[12]
