Después de que Alemania tuvo que devolver el cuadro El Cordero de Dios a Bélgica, como se describe en el Tratado de Versalles, y los belgas vieron una amenaza de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se decidió en 1940 darle un refugio seguro al cuadro en el Vaticano. Cuando el cuadro estaba en camino al Vaticano, Italia declaró la guerra junto a Alemania y los planes fueron modificados. Se optó por llevar el cuadro a Pau en Francia.
