Le musée du folk art tyrolien est situé dans l'ancien couvent des franciscains à côté de l'église Hofkirche d'Innsbruck, à proximité immédiate de la vieille ville. C'est l'une des cinq maisons des musées du Tyrol.
En 1888, l'association des métiers tyroliens décida de créer un « musée des métiers tyroliens » à Innsbruck : une collection modèle devait être créée pour donner des idées et des orientations au métier tyrolien menacé par l'industrialisation. En conséquence, l'activité de collecte initiale visait surtout des produits contemporains de haute qualité artisanale.
