La Carinthie est le Land le plus méridional de l'Autriche, limitrophe de l'Italie et de la Slovénie.
La géographie de la Carinthie est marquée par sa situation dans les Alpes orientales, avec leur faune et leur flore spécifiques. Le Land est situé dans la zone tempérée de l'Europe centrale; au sens orographique, la crête alpine principale au nord joue le rôle de barrière météorologique. En hiver, on remarque souvent une couche d'inversion dans les basses régions.
