La ruine du château de Sigmundsburg se trouve – totalement cachée par la forêt – sur une île dans le lac de Fernstein. La région appartient à la commune de Nassereith dans le district d'Imst, au Tyrol.
Le château de Sigmundsburg a été construit par le duc Sigmund le Monnayeur. C'était un « hommage » à sa première femme, la fille du roi d'Écosse, Éléonore, qu'il avait épousée en 1449. Après l'achèvement du château, en 1463, Éléonore y résida, le préférant à la « cour fourmillant de visiteurs » du palais impérial d'Innsbruck. Le duc l'utilisait probablement lors de chasses dans la région riche en gibier. On s'amusait également à pêcher dans le lac riche en truites, pour lequel il y avait quatre bateaux. Cependant, le château isolé servait aussi occasionnellement de refuge, en 1463/65 face à une épidémie et en 1478 contre les Turcs.
