L'Essex Farm Cemetery doit son nom à une ferme qui se trouvait à cet endroit et qui portait le nom d'Essex Farm sur les cartes d'état-major britanniques. Ici reposent 1199 morts du Commonwealth. Dans les bunkers situés à côté de la ferme, le médecin canadien John McCrae écrivit le 3 mai 1915 le poème mondialement connu "In Flanders Fields". Il mourut le 28 janvier 1918 d'une pneumonie et d'une méningite et fut enterré à Wimereux (France).
