Le cimetière d'Essex Farm a été nommé d'après une ferme située à cet endroit, qui était mentionnée sur les cartes britanniques comme Essex Farm. Ici, 1199 soldats du Commonwealth sont enterrés. Dans les abris à côté de la ferme, le médecin canadien John McCrae a écrit le 3 mai 1915 le poème mondialement célèbre 'In Flanders Fields'. Il est mort le 28 janvier 1918 d'une pneumonie et d'une méningite et a été enterré à Wimereux (France).
