Il cimitero di Essex Farm deve il suo nome a una fattoria che si trovava in questo luogo e che portava il nome di Essex Farm sulle mappe dello stato maggiore britannico. Qui riposano 1199 morti del Commonwealth. Nei bunker situati accanto alla fattoria, il medico canadese John McCrae scrisse il 3 maggio 1915 la famosa poesia "In Flanders Fields". Morì il 28 gennaio 1918 a causa di una polmonite e di una meningite e fu sepolto a Wimereux (Francia).
