Le fort Liefkenshoek était une fortification militaire qui a servi de poste avancé de la République entre 1585 et 1786. En 1894, cette fortification a été mise hors service. Liefkenshoek est devenu un hôpital (lazaret) du service de quarantaine sur l'Escaut jusqu'en 1952. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le fort a été utilisé comme base et dépôt de la marine belge. De 1964 à 1973, il a servi de station de vacances pour l'armée belge à destination des militaires professionnels et de leurs familles. Ensuite, le fort a été fermé jusqu'à son achat en juin 1980 par la commune de Beveren. Depuis 1985, c'est un monument protégé.
