Fort Liefkenshoek war eine militärische Festung, die in der Zeit von 1585 bis 1786 als Vorpost der Republik diente. 1894 wurde dieses Festungswerk außer Betrieb genommen. Liefkenshoek wurde bis 1952 ein Krankenhaus (Lazarett) des Quarantänedienstes an der Schelde. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Fort als Basis und Depot der belgischen Marine genutzt. Von 1964 bis 1973 diente es als Ferienort der belgischen Armee für Berufssoldaten und deren Familien. Danach wurde das Fort geschlossen, bis es im Juni 1980 von der Gemeinde Beveren gekauft wurde. Seit 1985 ist es ein geschütztes Denkmal.
