La région autour d'Affligem avait à l'époque une excellente réputation pour la culture du houblon. "Les marchands de houblon d'Angleterre jusqu'aux États baltes achetaient le houblon. En 1654, l'Abbaye d'Affligem avait déjà 6 500 fosses à houblon. Un siècle plus tard, il y avait deux chaudières de brassage, chacune d'une capacité d'environ quarante fûts de bière."
