Die Region um Affligem hatte zu jener Zeit einen ausgezeichneten Ruf für den Anbau von Hopfen. „Hopfenhändler von England bis zu den Baltischen Staaten kauften den Hopfen auf. 1654 hatte das Kloster Affligem bereits 6.500 Hopfengruben. Ein Jahrhundert später standen dort zwei Braukessel, jeder mit einer Kapazität von etwa vierzig Biertonnen.“
